As we continue to make more and more use of both electrical and electronic devices in the course of our daily lives, our generation of e-waste increases in direct correlation. Unfortunately, we have not managed to keep up when it comes to recycling our e-waste, meaning that much of it is tossed into either the landfills or the incinerators. So much so that some estimates claim more than 80 percent of e-waste is not recycled.
This is problematic because e-waste can cause serious problems when it is tossed out rather than recycled. Examples range from chemicals seeping into the surrounding environment to the release of pollutants when plastics are burned in the incinerators. In extreme cases, e-waste can even contain hazardous chemicals that should not be handled by anyone who does not know the appropriate safety measures.
